Hello again! After reading my first guide about the original Strawberry Shortcake characters, you might be wondering...but I thought there were more dolls than that?
Yes, there were more dolls made, after Strawberry Shortcake had been out on the market for a few years and was selling well. Created along the lines of an "International Flavor", several new characters were made into dolls and released in 1983. And yes, they also smelled like their namesakes as well (sweet and yummy).
THE 'NEWER' ORIGINAL STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE DOLLS:
Crepe Suzette. Her pet is a blue poodle wearing a white bib with a red fleur de lis, named Eclair. Crepe and Eclair are from France. Crepe wears a rather plain brown beret as a hat. She has curly blue hair. She wears a green and white striped body suit with ling arms and legs. She wears a white and brown apron, also with a red fleur de lis (like a little flower). She wears blue shoes.
Cafe Ole. Her pet is a tan donkey with a pink collar named Burrito. Cafe amd Burrito are from Mexico. Cafe wears a large pink and white sombrero style hat. She has slightly curly reddish orange hair. She wears a pretty white dress with little flowers at the bottom, and a colorful, striped and tassled cover over the top part of her dress. She wears green and white striped tights and pink sandals.
Almond Tea. Her pet is a purple and white panda named Marza Panda. Almond and Marza are from China. Almond wears a flat, yellow flower-like hat with a green stem. Her hair is dark purple and straight. She wears a long sleeved floral yellow shirt and apurple vest and light purple pants. She wears green and white striped tights and purple shoes.
Mint Tulip. Her pet is a white and yellow duck wearing a green hat, named Mash Mallard. Mint and Marsh are from Holland. Mint wears a white, tulip-shaped hat with a green stem. Her hair is stright and blonde. She wears a white dress with a floral print, and a light green apron. She wears green and white striped tights, and yellow shoes that have slight points to look like wooden shoes.
Lem and Ada.Their pet is a light yellow/off white sheepdog named Sugar Woofer. lem, Ada and Sugar are from England. Lem and Ada are siblings (twins, actually). They are also younger children than most of the others in Strawberryland, so they are smaller than the other dolls. Lem is the boy and he wears a green and yellow polka dot cap. His hair is slightly curly and yellow. He wears a white bib with a lemon on it. He has a white shirt with pink polka dots and white and yellow striped shorts. He wears green and white striped slippers. Ada is the girl and she has a green and white polka dot bow in her hair. It is curly and yellow with 2 big curls on top. She has a white bib with a lime on it. She wears a white and yellow striped shirt and white shorts with pink polka dots on it. She wears green and white striped slippers.
Sour Grapes. She is another 'bad guy' on the show, and as an adult, she is much bigger than most of the other dolls. She is the same size as the Purple Pieman (her boyfriend) and also has rather long arms and legs. Her pet is a purple snake named Dregs.Sour has dark purple hair with a blue streak, that is done in an up-do and held with a yellow ribbon. She has clusters of grapes as earrings. She has a filmy scarf, and a long purple dress, decorated with clusters of grapes. She has permanently attached long green gloves that go up to her elbows and dark purple tights and shoes.
Banana Twirl. This isprobably the hardest doll to find, and was not released as a "regular" doll, or even as a Party pleaser doll. She is only available with a Berrykin (which is not a pet). The Berrykin is small, hard plastic and wears a yellow suit and a hat that looks like a banana peel.Banana has curly blonde hair done up in 2 pigtails and yellow ribbons. She has a pretty dress that is pale yellow with banana print on the bottom and white on top. She wears pink, green, yellow and white striped tights and yellow shoes.
Peach Blush. This is probably the second hardest doll to find. Peach was not made as a 'regular doll' and was only availabe as a Party Pleaser or with a Berrykin. Her pet is a light yellow and pink lamb called Melanie Belle. The Party Pleaser version of Peach has her wearing a yellow flattish hat with scalloped edges. She has pink curly hair. She has a checkered pink dress with peachy-pink sleeves and a white hem with peaches on it. She wears green and white striped tights and has peach color shoes.
Plum Puddin'. This is probably the third hardest doll to find. Her pet is a puple and blue owl named Elderberry. For a while it seemed that Plum was being drawn as a boy, but as a doll, it is clear that she is a girl. There is not a 'regular' version of Plum Puddin'; she is only available as a Party Pleaser or with a Berrykin. The Party Pleaser version of Plum has her wearing a large dark purple hat with pink polka dots and a green and white bow at the front. She has straight blue hair. She is the only character that wears glasses, and they are purple. Her dress is purple and white. She wears green and white striped tights and has blue shoes.
The Berry Princess. Another very difficult doll to find. Perhaps the hardest as she does not resemble a Strawberry Shortcake character and could be overlooked as another line of doll. The Berry Princess was not made as a 'regular' doll, or as a Party Pleaser, or with a Berrykin. She alone was sold all by herself. I guess she didn't mind, as she is a princess. She was the original keeper of the Berrykins until she gave them to Strawberry Shortcake and her friends. She gees with a wand and a palette. Her dress has pockets that you can stick your Berrykins inside. She looks more like a Barbie doll than a Strawberry Shortcake doll, adn unlike the others, she had no PVC miniatures made of her. The Berry princess is tall, with blonde hair. She has a very small hairband-type bonnet. She has a pink dress with chiffon on the bottom, and a flower and strawberry printed pink silk botom seam. she gees with a stand to help her to stand and pose. she also gees with a sweet-smelling perfume pouch.
I hope that this has helped you. I would be happy to give you more information; next time about how to identify the Party Pleaser and Berrykins lines of the 1980s. There is still more Strawberry Shortcake information after that though...with the short-lived 1990s line and the current 2000s line of Strawberry Shortcake character dolls!
